This tour allows you to enter inside the Leonardo Da Vinci's Vineyard located in the centre of Milan.
The vineyard was donated to Leonardo
by Ludovico Maria Sforza called “Il Moro” or “Arbitro d’Italia” following the Guicciardini. The duke was so impressed by the Leonardo's work at nearby refectory of the cathedral and Dominican convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the painting Last Supper (go to the Last Supper Tour).
It was a gesture to recognize the many incredible works Leonardo had been creating for him and the city of Milan.
The donation is confirmed by an official letter dated 26 April 1499.
In the Codex Atlanticus and in the manuscript I of France, there are notes by Leonardo for a plot of land of dimensions of 100 Milanese arms (about 59 metres) by 294 arms (about 175 metres) and its correspondence to an area of Milanese perches 15 and three quarters, that is, about one hectare.
In his will, drawn up at Amboise a month before his death, he ordered that the rectangular vineyard be divided into two equal lots, one to be assigned to Salai, who had built his own house on the land, and the other to Giovanbattista Villani, the servant who had followed him to France.
During this tour you'll be able to walk where Leonardo used to take some rest after the long work at the nearby Last Supper.
The tour of the vineyard includes, besides the beautiful gardens, access to Casa degli Atellani, the last remaining trace of the ancient Borgo delle Grazie.
The place was restored in the 1900s by Piero Portaluppi, a Milanese architect.
Since 2018 the original vines have been brought back to life with help from the University of Agricultural Sciences of Milan so, in addition to your visit, you can also purchase some of the vineyard’s only wine, the Malvasia di Milano.
